VAR to be used at World Cup

VAR: Video assistant referees to be used at 2018 World Cup in Russia

The World Cup is set to use video replays this summer, with FIFA confirming a sponsor is being sought for the technology.

VAR has been trialled in some domestic English cup games this season, and has been used in Germany and Italy.

The system was used for the first time at the 2014 World Cup when goal-line technology was deployed.

But now replays can be used when there is a “clear and obvious error” involving goals, penalty awards, red cards, and mistaken identity.

The International Football Association Board (Ifab) “unanimously approved” its introduction on a permanent basis after a meeting in Zurich on Saturday.

Leagues and competitions must now apply to Ifab to implement the technology.
